Benjamin Rush Milam

Ben Milam is best known as a military leader and hero of the Texas Revolution. Milam County, the city of Milam, and a variety of civic works throughout Texas bear his name in honor of his perseverance and sacrifice in the formation of the great state of Texas. What many people do not know, however, is that Ben Milam was also a diligent entrepreneur, devoted to bringing—in his words—as many “families of industrious habit” as possible to the brave new world of Texas.

After a decade of hard work as an empresario, in 1835, Ben Milam convinced the governor of Coahuila and Texas to grant land titles to the settlers of Milam’s colony, positioned between the Guadalupe and Colorado Rivers. This first land grant incorporated the boundaries of the South Lamar neighborhood, Del Curto Road & Milam Grove. Amazingly, the land grant is now a part of the vibrant 78704 Zilker Park neighborhood, just minutes from the most desirable spots in Austin. Milam Grove residents can enjoy popular Austin mainstay restaurants, hike through the Barton Creek greenbelt, and play team sports at Zilker Park.

Milam Grove pays tribute to the heroic vision and entrepreneurial spirit of Ben Milam.
